Purpose Based Wellness – Argentum Best of the Best Award 2012
Purpose-Based Wellness is a program for seniors to combat chronic diseases and ailments commonly found among the aging population. In 2011, Senior Living Communities saw the need for a supplemental program focusing on combating chronic diseases and ailments commonly found in the aging population. These needs are addressed by providing Members with wellness programs, classes, and lectures. This allows them to manage certain chronic diseases and symptoms by seeking to prevent avoidable health events such as falls.
Purpose Based Wellness is unique to Senior Living Communities as it is a hybrid program that encompasses elements of both clinical rehabilitation and regular exercise. It utilizes the prescriptive benefits of rehabilitation (flexibility, dexterity, cardiovascular health, balance, etc.) in fitness classes/1-on-1 training. The Programming is not designed to replace rehabilitation but rather to enhance the current long-term care model. In the current system, an older adult typically has to suffer a negative health event or participate in an elective surgery before gaining access to rehabilitative services. Following that event, most adults use their medical benefits to access rehabilitation, but those benefits have specific time limits. Purpose-based Programming complements the physical benefits received in rehabilitation. This is done by offering a deliberately measured approach for adults as they leave a skilled nursing center in hope of reducing the amount of care needed for everyday life.

In 2010, Senior Living Communities developed the C.L.I.M.B. Program, which stands for Confidence, Longevity, Independence, Mobility and Balance. It is a program that is used to reduce deficiencies in lower-body strength. As we age, these deficiencies may result in a fall or other negative health outcomes and impact an older adult’s ability to remain independent in the future. This program is an example of preventative programming with a purpose.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide. As we age, physical changes in our health increase the risk of falls and if they occur, can lead to severe injuries including bruises, hip fractures, and head trauma. Hip injuries are hard to recover from, and afterward most individuals are not able to live on their own. The WHO suggests that gait (walking), balance, and functional training are imperative for older people to minimize the risk possibility of falls.
C.L.I.M.B. is the pinnacle of purpose-based wellness, used to combat chronic diseases and ailments commonly found among the aging population. This program seeks to reverse the negative progression many older adults face once they begin to lose strength in their lower body. Development was based on research conducted by Wake Forest University with applicable permissions and suggestions that simple exercises make a significant difference for older adults.
